How Directional Drilling works
Directional drilling is a trenchless construction technique used to install pipelines and conduits horizontally beneath the surface, without the need for open excavation. This method is especially suited for Auckland’s urban infrastructure and natural landscapes.
The Process:
- Rig Setup
A surface-mounted directional drilling rig is installed to begin the process. - Pilot Bore
A steel drill string is pushed and rotated through the ground, following a pre-designed bore path. A tracking system ensures the drill head stays on course. - Reaming
Once the pilot bore reaches the target, the drill head is replaced with a reamer to enlarge the borehole to the required diameter. - Pipe Installation
The pipeline or conduit is attached to the reamer and pulled back through the borehole, completing the installation. - Drilling Fluid Management
A mixture of water and bentonite clay (drilling fluid) is used to cool the drill bit, remove soil cuttings, and stabilise the borehole walls.
